We Were Soldiers (2002)

This day in history !!!

Today marks the anniversary of Operation Chopper, the first time US forces participated in a battle in the Vietnam War against the North Vietnamese on January 12th, 1962.

American choppers transported 1000 South Vietnamese soldiers to the battle, but did not put a single American trooper on the ground. Here is the Wikipedia article for that battle:

Three years after that battle on November 14th, 1965 the Battle of Ia Drang happened and became the first real battle between American and North Vietnamese soldiers. Here is the Wikipedia Article for that battle:

Here is the trailer for the film on YouTube:

Mel Gibson, before he lost all his marbles, plays Lt. Col. Hal Moore, who becomes the first man to lead an attack against the North Vietnamese in the early days of the American involvement in the Vietnam War.  As he fights on the battlefield, his wife (Madeleine Stowe), takes on just as serious of a roll in the war effort as her husband has, by being the one, who helps grieving wives deal with the death of their husbands back home.  This is a film that tackles the brutality of war contrasted to trying to make sense of it all back home.
