Trailer for the film on YouTube:

I work in a technologically heavy business and every now and then I feel like my computers and equipment have a life of their own.  It harkens me back to my childhood when the topic of our machines coming to life would be thought and I probably owe it to this film and all of its sequels that followed.  However, this is the original.  This is the one that introduced the world to the most famous Volkswagen of them all, Herbie.  Walt Disney Studios had their hands in live-action films all the way back to the 1940s, but in the 1960s and 1970s they really turned it up a notch by exploring situations that involved technology/science becoming just as important as us.  It gave us this idea that instead of being the master over technology, we might have to make friends with it someday.

Yes, Herbie is a Volkswagen that is instilled with its own consciousness and thoughts, as well as emotions.  He stumbles across a third-rate racecar driver named Jim (Dean Jones), who takes him in (unknowingly of Herbie’s talents), and turns him into a racing giant.  Unfortunately, Jim doesn’t see Herbie for who he is and still accepts that he is winning these races, because of his driving skills, but everyone else around Jim, especially his right-hand-man, Tennessee (Buddy Hackett), can see that Herbie is not your typical little car.  To make matters worse, Jim also has to deal with some conniving bad-guys (David Tomlinson and Joe Flynn), who are trying their best to ruin Jim’s chances a racing stardom.

Walt Disney Love Bug Record Narrated by Buddy Hackett from 1969 on YouTube:  Hilarious.

This is a great, classic, family adventure, with plenty of hidden jokes for the grown-ups to enjoy (ex: Jim’s soon-to-be girlfriend Carole (Michele Lee), is standing in the window of her store and all you see are her great legs under a sign that says “may we direct your attention to these”).  It was a pleasure watching this film again today as much as it was for me in the early 70s.  Check it out. - Phil
