Trailer for the Film on YouTube:
I wasn’t a big fan of this film the first time I saw it. I think I was still mad at Clooney for destroying the Batman series, but all is forgiven now. One of the few big-budget mainstream films set during the first Persian Gulf War, this one, kind-of, follows the same story-line as Kelly’s Heroes about our heroes trying to liberate a stolen treasure of gold from the enemy. This film has some fantastic cinematography going on, as well as great flashbacks. What the Matrix movie did for CGI this one did for Cinematography. It’s a gritty, lack-of-color, approach. They also use a device that is prevalent today on TV shows like CSI or House, where they recreate what is happening inside the human body when a bullet tears through skin and bone or when a tube is stuck inside to release pressure on a wound. It helps with the impact and also the anxiety felt by our characters.
The most interesting part of the film is when our three heroes (Clooney, Wahlberg and Cube), go into a building or bunker and leave the fourth King (Jonze), outside. It actually gives the viewer two different stories happening at once. There is an action scene going on inside and a social-political drama happening on the outside. It is very interesting and I had forgotten how funny this film is. Some details in the film are a bit off, but it is a dark comedy-drama, so the overall product is very entertaining and in some ways a learning experience. - Phil
