Trailer for the film on YouTube:

This is a great film, based on a true story, explaining the saga about one High School student, who beats the odds and eventually gets a scholarship that sends him on his path to a career at NASA.  It is the mid-1950s and America is facing its fears of the Soviets getting into space before them.  Homer Hickam, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a simple kid growing up in a coal mining town in rural West Virginia.

His father, played magnificently by Chris Cooper, is the leader of the coalmine and he sees his son having a future in coal mining.  Homer, however, has a different idea about his future.  The first few minutes of the film shows us the day that the Russian satellite Sputnik is sent up into orbit and as it crosses over the West Virginia skies it sets a tone that travels through the rest of this great film.  It tells us about how naive Americans were when the Russians got into space first.  The idea of the Russians taking pictures of our bases and spying on us is explored and the veil of paranoia that always accompanies moments in history is felt heavily at the start of the film.  The concept of a space race and beating the Russians all begins to take shape. - Phil

SPUTNIK CBS1 News Report 1957 on YouTube:

But, this is only a small fragment of what this film is about.  The space race, satellites, America’s place in the world and Sputnik are all part of the backdrop to an even bigger part of life.  The main core of the film is the study of relationships between Fathers and Sons.  It is an excellent study in Father and Son relationships, and Homer and his father couldn’t be more different as much as they are the same.  It is the small battles between the father and the son contrasted to the battle of the space race.  It is the small battles between classmates and the principle contrasted to surviving in a coalmine.  It juxtaposes the more modern idea that there are a lot of things that kids understand more than their parents do.  It is the, always, conflicting, struggle between old-world thinking and the ideas-of-the-future that bind this film together. - Phil
