This is another film based on and brought to you by the famed Broadway Musical team of Rodgers and Hammerstein (their 8th to be exact). They are the ones that brought to you, among others, Oklahoma, South Pacific and A Sound of Music.

A Chinese woman and her father illegally enter San Francisco in order to marry her fiance (an arranged marriage). While in San Francisco, she meets another man and falls deeply in love with him and the American way of life, to her father's disapproval. Wow! Illegal immigration back when it was cool. Wow Again! A Jack Soo vehicle – very cool! Also, there is a cameo by James Hong (Big Trouble in Little China and also the man from the famous Chinese Restaurant Seinfeld episode – CARTWRIGHT !!!!!!). Also in this film is Charlie Chan's #2 son, Victor Sen Yung as Frankie Wing.
I don’t want to sound too much like a typical-male, but I must. Nancy Kwan and Reiko Sato are hot !!!! Sorry, I have to say it. What I liked about this musical, was most of the musical interludes fit into the story. There were only a couple scenes that seemed out of place and unbelievable to the story, which is always a complaint of mine in musicals. I do not understand the concept of breaking out into song and dance at the drop of a hat, but this one keeps it to a slow boil. The scene with Nancy Kwan in her bedroom was one of those “out of place” scenes, but I didn’t care because she is hot.
A tricky way to deal with musical numbers is to make them into dream sequences, which they do at least twice in this film. This kind of story-telling device helps to justify the musical moment as being believable. The first dream sequence was neat, especially the part where they take Reiko Sato, in the roll as Helen, and drag her away from our hero, as the dream sequence comes to an end – excellent use of, and concealing of, wires. Wonderful dancing choreography and great sets save this movie as well as it being a fun-loving, feel-good time. I am so glad I finally found another musical, other than Grease and the Wizard of Oz that I like.
What is very interesting and something to look for in this film is the prominent display of the color orange, especially in the last 1/3rd of the film. It symbolizes the strength of the power of love and foreshadows who may succeed in finding that love. – Phil
