The Big Red One is hailed in some circles as one of the greatest war films ever made. It is ahead of its time and it does work great today. Mark Hamill is not Luke Skywalker at all and it is a refreshing change to see him in this film opposite the great Lee Marvin. That is the coolest part of the film. The fact that Director Samuel Fuller could take Luke Skywalker and Lewis Skolnick from Revenge of the Nerds (Carradine), and make them look really tough and cool is kinda' impressive.

One more note: If you have to watch the original 1980 theatrical version that is fine, but the new Reconstruction 2004 Director's version is the one you should see. Some of the new scenes make it work better for 2016 audiences and fills in some gaps that made the original confusing in some spots. It has a 7.2 in the IMDB.com. See it !!!
