About 10 years ago myself and a bunch of friends had a movie club and we did the year 1974 and Dersu Uzala (1975) was on the list.  Some publications/Web Sites have this film listed in 1975.  Here are some of those reviews.

Phil Congleton:
This is a mesmerizing Russian film that is directed by Akira Kurosawa that takes place in the Mongolian region in Siberia with a Russian Army Exploration Party running into a little hunter-guide who has lived in this area for years and can find his way around the densely covered forest at ease. I enjoyed reading the broken “Russian” in the English subtitles every time Dersu spoke. It was interesting to me. It proved once again that subtitles work and are better than any form of dubbing. The film is beautifully shot, has great lighting and the use of camera lens filters totally fits the classic Kurusawa style. The best way to describe the film is “Tarzan in Siberia”, especially when they try to take Derzu back to civilization. – Grade: A-

Ross Brakman:
Who could'a thunk such a thing would exist as a Russian buddy buddy film set in the Siberian outback between a Russian military man and a Mongolian hunter? And who could'a thunk such a film would win the best foreign Oscar for its year? And who could'a thunk it would be an engaging, warm tale of male bonding (with minimal homoeroticism, I might add)? Such a thing exists, and it's called Dersu Uzala after the main character. Set in a desolate Russian landscape that all too often looks like the Philadelphia region without the cookie cutter houses, the film tells of the relationship between two unlikely friends set in a disappearing wilderness close to the middle of nowhere, and how one of those friends, Dersu, cannot conform to the demands of society. A bittersweet story of ageing and displacement, this low-key drama is, as the reviews say, definitely worth a looksee. – Grade: A
