Trailer for the Film on YouTube:

This film is depressing as shit, but effective. The grainy film stock used in the film gave the film a certain reality factor, like it was almost a documentary. That was felt even in the first hour of the film, in which we are introduced to the characters and have to sit through a wedding, which annoyed me a little, but the director, Cimino, was able to force the depressing edge, even into the wedding and that gave the film an interesting dimension that would bring me back into the story. The second part of the film is the war section and that was done quite well capturing the horror and the sadness of Vietnam. The third part brings it all together, but there never really is a feeling of finality or an achievement in not feeling depressed. Hailed as a great film. - Phil

Fall of Saigon 1975 on YouTube:

About 10 years ago myself and a bunch of friends had a movie club and we did the year 1961 and Lola was on the list.  Here are some of those responses to the film:

Jennifer Congleton:
This movie is awesome! Before watching it I had no idea what it was about and during that long wedding scene I started to wonder if I was ever going to find out. There were other scenes that seemed to drag on, but if you paid attention you would always find symbolism, foreshadowing, and juxtaposition. I loved the old, unrefined quality that this film has. I noticed that most of the music used in this film was environmental- in the bar, at the wedding, etc. The Russian roulette stuff was crazy! I was actually half covering my eyes each time they would pull the trigger. It’s really cool to see these actors when they were young in the 70s. Christopher Walken’s hair was awesome. Robert DeNiro looked cool too and his performance was great. - Grade: A

Ross Brakman:
It's difficult for me to give a movie like this a grade as high as a "B+" considering how effectively joyless it is. The one word that I think best describes "The Deer Hunter" is 'harrowing.' The bonding in the first hour is overwhelmed with the stark gray lifestyles of the poverty in northeastern Pennsylvania's coal region. The intensity of the second hour in war torn Vietnam is emotionally exhausting, and the return to Pennsylvania in the third hour is dominated by misery and despair. But it's all presented so effectively and realistically. America felt this way when surviving soldiers returned thoroughly damaged from an unjust war where too many were killed for dubious reasons, and our political institutions were corrupted from the highest officials down. The love of country was still there, but tainted by flawed politics. Although timely, I hope no one tries to remake this movie. I simply cannot imagine it done any better a second time. - Grade: B+

The Deer Hunter and Michael Cimino winning Best Picture and Directing: 1979 Oscars on YouTube:

Russ Fama:
I forgot how well crafted this movie is. Another Pennsylvania moment from 1978. A master stroke in humanistic and personal dignity. Great realistic settings, dialogue, characters and soundtrack. Best Frankie Vallie song ever. (His royalty check for 1978 must have been impressive. - Grease, etc...) - Grade: A+

Dana Stevenson:
Wow, make sure you have the box of tissues next to you when you watch this film. How depressing!!! It’s really a movie that’s worth watching though, as it is such a realistic depiction of the Vietnam War and how it affected the men who fought in it, as well as their families. Granted the beginning of the movie is rather slow with the whole wedding scene but after that I really found myself glued to the screen and couldn’t wait to find out what was going to happen to each of the characters. DeNiro and Walken give brilliant performances and it’s easy to see why the movie was nominated for and won so many academy awards. - Grade: A

Rich Shumaker:
Wow! Powerful film! The foreshadowing at the wedding with the Vietnam vet was creepy. The disconnect of war is clearly shown in this film. It is not a Vietnam War film more as it is a film about life that includes war. The other thing I found ironic or funny and I don't know if it was the writers idea was Russian Roulette. The reason I say funny or ironic is that they were from a Russian American community outside of Pittsburgh. They travel to Vietnam and end up playing Russian Roulette. The only bad thing about this film is the dig on the Eagles. That is how you can tell they are in a suburb of Pittsburgh because they say the Philadelphia Eagles wear skirts, ouch! - Grade: A

Run Time:  90 mins
Genre:  Drama, Romance, Foreign
Format:  Widescreen Format, Black and White
Director:  Jacques Demy
Starring:  Anouk Aimée and Marc Michel

This is one of those stories that gets rolling and draws you in.  It has a good story, interesting characters, in fact, the character development is quite good and the use of back-stories is pioneering. Ah! The French! What a happy place. They are so laid back and don’t worry about silly things and silly taboos, like the scene at the dinner table when the fourteen-year-old girl bums a cigarette off of our hero, right in front of her mother, and no one cares. It was these tidbits that kept me in the film and made it a very interesting experience. - Phil

Trailer for the Film on YouTube (this includes restoration footage too):

About 10 years ago myself and a bunch of friends had a movie club and we did the year 1961 and Lola was on the list.  Here are some of those responses to the film:

Ross Brakman:
A well paced drama set on the streets of Nantes. I would hardly describe "Lola" as one of the ten best films ever made, as described on the box, but it was interesting. It contains three or four separate stories that all merge predictably by the end. It has the fantastical love story, the vague discontent, and the borderline creepy friendship between the 14 year old girl and the American sailor. Really, who could hope for more than all that? – Grade: B

Jennifer Congleton:
This is a romantic French film with a cast of charming, believable characters. The story starts with Roland, a restless young man who hates his job and is ready to leave everything behind to go experience the world. Just when he thought his life couldn't be any more boring, he has an exciting chance meeting with a childhood friend, Cecile, who is now a caberet dancer that goes by "Lola". The plot unfolds from there, telling 4 or 5 interlacing stories. Although it's a bit creepy, I love the scene when Frankie the sailor and Cecile, the 14 year old girl, go to the fair. It was just a really cool looking scene with some slow motion and nostalgic music. And that little song that Lola sings about herself is just adorable. - Grade: B+

Brad Green:
Jacques Demy’s directorial debut incorporates some New Wave sensibilities (though never plunging fully into the genre), emphasizing the bittersweet moodiness that would become a trademark of his, as well as of much of French ‘60’s cinema in general. The storyline is actually quite sophisticated: two parallel tales with intertwining characters, each centered on a French femme named Cecille (“Lola” being the stage name of one- a burlesque dancer played by the lovely Anouk Aimee). Each of the lead characters are caught between hopefulness and desperation, with the latter usually prevailing. I’m a sucker for these films: short, sleek, suave, and stylish… downbeat but never without humor or irony. - Grade: B

Wikipedia.org Article for the Novel Guns of Navarone (1957) by Alistair MacLean:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Guns_of_Navarone_(novel)

Trailer for the Film on YouTube:

Two powerful German guns control the seas past the Greek island of Navarone making the evacuation of endangered British troops on a neighboring island impossible. Air attack is useless so a team of six Allied and Greek soldiers are put ashore to meet up with partisans to try and dynamite the guns.

A great assemblage of actors/characters, combine for a telling story about a rather obscure part of World War II history, circa 1943. Germany was trying to push Turkey into becoming part of the Axis. 2000 British troops are trapped on a Greek Island in the Aegean Sea. The only way to get them out is to get through a small sliver of water that is protected by a huge set of Nazi canon guns on the Island of Navarone. To shut down these guns would save the British soldiers and would eventually help with the gradual move into the interior of Europe on the way to a final showdown with Germany in 1945. A ragtag group of British commandos lead by Gregory Peck (who is really cool in this film), and consisting of two other legendary actors, David Niven (who was awesome I will add), and Anthony Quinn, along with a couple other unknown guys and some resistance women, are sent to scale the giant walled cliffs of Navarone so they can reach the base and blow up the guns. Along the way, they have to work their way through obstacles like German boats, a hurricane, the cliffs and snow covered mountains, with a handful of interesting character studies to fill in the gaps. The scene crossing the channel and the subsequent battle with a German boat reminds me a lot of the boat trip down the Nung River in Apocalypse Now, that would be seen 15 years later and their fight with the Vietcon. David Niven is a trip and he really helps the story along with some moments of dark comedy relief and some sobering commentaries on the horrors of war. - Phil
